Finance for non finance managers

a better understanding

Background
A significant service managers play a major part in the financial management of the organisations in which they work. On a daily basis they will make service and financial decisions and they will have ongoing budgetary and other financial control obligations. Their contribution is taking place against the background of increasingly complex funding, billing and payment systems; more rigorous governance regimes and a growing need to reshape service productivity and reduce costs.

To maximise their effectiveness, all service managers need to have an up to date range of finance skills, knowledge and information. This course will explain the national and local financial regime, de-mystifying the terminology that goes with it. It will examine the organisations own financial arrangements and position, helping to provide a clear understanding for managers of the important part they play. It will also offer practical guidance and skills to help them in their day to day role in making financial decisions and managing budgets.

Objectives
By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the key elements of the organisations
  • Describe the financial position of their own organisation
  • Understand financial governance arrangements within their organisation and their own financial roles and responsibilities
  • Better identify their needs for information and the approach required to manage budgets for their services
  • Have improved engagement with all key financial processes within their organisation.

Duration
This course ideally requires two days to allow local tailoring and use of active exercise material to improve the effectiveness of the learning. The operational pressures faced by service managers are recognised and this could be accommodated by offering a course either run on concurrent days or separated to fit in with service rotas. Alternatively a one day course with a longer day and some pre-reading could be established to offer the essential elements.

Format
Briefings, exercises, case studies and discussions, with extensive use of local materials and examples.

Local Tailoring
Our training manager would ideally visit your organisation to obtain local information and perspectives which will be built into the course. This can involve a meeting with a sample of course participants to assess their concerns, needs and training preferences. Tailoring can also be undertaken off site by use of information on the website and via accumulated documents.
