Those who have worked within continuing care since its inception in 1995 will have experienced numerous changes, some of which were a direct result of emotive court cases. 1 October 2007 saw the requirement for PCTs to implement the long awaited National NHS Continuing Health Care Criteria. This brought relief in that PCTs would be operating to a nationally recognised set of criteria with assessments for eligibility for the most vulnerable being regulated and a significant move away from the ‘postcode lottery’. However, the extent to how much costs would increase, the additional demands upon staff resources, and the continued feeling of working in isolation could easily have been underestimated.
